About James R. E.

James R. E. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2005. He continued straight through to earn his Juris Doctor from Drake University Law School, completing his law degree in 2008. Those academic years shaped a practical approach to law and public service that has guided his career.

After law school, Smith built a practice that spans two state bars. He is licensed to practice in both Illinois and Wisconsin. That dual admission has allowed him to take on matters that cross state lines and to advise clients who operate or live in both jurisdictions. He has combined courtroom work, client counseling and case management in a way that fits a small-firm model.

Community involvement has been a steady part of Smith’s professional life. Since 2017 he has served as a Director-at-Large for the Legal Aid Society of Door County, Inc., a role that places him in the governance of an organization focused on access to legal services. He also joined the Resource Development Committee of the Boys & Girls Club of Door County in 2018. Those positions involve fundraising oversight, program support and working with local stakeholders to maintain services for residents.

Smith practices from his own firm, The Law Office of James R. E. Smith, S.C., where he is the principal attorney. He runs a compact office that handles client intake, case preparation and court filings. Running his own shop has meant managing the full life cycle of cases, coordinating with experts and keeping close contact with clients. Colleagues describe him as methodical and attentive to procedural detail.

Over the years his work has required navigating both state court systems and various administrative processes. He has represented individual clients and business entities, providing legal counsel, drafting documents and appearing in hearings when necessary. That mix of responsibilities reflects the realities of small-practice law in a region where clients often need practical, day-to-day legal help.

Smith remains active in the Door County community through his nonprofit roles and in his legal practice. He currently practices through The Law Office of James R. E. Smith, S.C., representing clients in matters in Illinois and Wisconsin.
