About James P.
James P. Sexton left the University of Maine in 1999 after earning a B.A., and went on to Western New England University School of Law where he completed his J.D. in 2007. He began his professional life in the Connecticut court system almost immediately. Those early years shaped how he approaches legal writing and oral argument. They also set the tone for a career that has remained closely tied to appellate work.
Sexton’s first positions after law school were in judicial chambers. In 2007 he served on the legal research staff for judges of the Connecticut Superior Court. That role gave him a front-row seat to the way trial records are developed and preserved for later review. In 2009 he became a law clerk to the Hon. Richard A. Robinson at the Connecticut Appellate Court. That clerkship exposed him to the mechanics of appellate decisionmaking and to courtroom strategies judges find persuasive.
After his clerkship he moved into private practice. In 2010 he joined Nuzzo & Roberts, LLC as an associate, working on appeals and related matters. By 2012 he had established the Law Office of James P. Sexton and operated as principal. Those years in private practice expanded his experience in drafting appellate briefs, handling procedural appeals, and preparing for oral argument in both state and federal venues.
Sexton has been active in bar work that aligns with his courtroom interests. Since 2013 he has served on the Executive Committee of the Connecticut Bar Association’s Appellate Advocacy Section. He also joined the American Bar Association’s Council of Appellate Lawyers in 2013. Earlier, from 2011 to 2014, he served as Appellate Practice Co-Chair in the Connecticut Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section. Colleagues say he has been a steady contributor to continuing legal education programs and panel discussions on appellate procedure.
He is admitted to practice in Connecticut and also holds admissions to the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Those credentials have allowed him to handle matters that cross state and federal lines. His work has involved written appellate advocacy and argued appeals, as well as advising trial counsel on preserving issues for appeal.
Sexton now practices at Taylor & Sexton, LLC. His practice concentrates on appellate litigation and related trial-level issues. He continues to split his time between drafting briefs and preparing clients and lawyers for oral argument in state and federal appeals.
