About James
James Nguyen earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center in 2018 after completing a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a minor in Biology at the University of Houston in 2015. He followed a traditional path through law school, combining classroom work with practical placements that exposed him to courtroom procedure and firm practice.
While still in school he sought hands-on experience. In 2016 he interned for the Hon. Debra Ibarra Mayfield at the 165th District Civil Court in Texas. That same year he served as a law clerk at Matthews, Lawson, McCutcheon, & Joseph PLLC. Those early positions immersed him in the routines of civil litigation and court administration.
After law school he continued to build that foundation. In 2017 he worked as a law clerk at Johns, Marrs, Ellis & Hodge and also held a role as a law clerk and associate lawyer at Hoover Slovacek LLP. Across those roles he supported attorneys on research, drafting, and case preparation. The sequence of clerkships gave him steady exposure to litigation practice and client work in Houston-area courts.
Nguyen joined Sorrels Law as an associate in 2021. As an associate he has handled client matters and assisted on case strategy and filings. The move into firm practice marked a shift from primarily supporting roles to more direct client responsibility. Colleagues describe him as methodical in his approach to case preparation and punctual in meeting filing deadlines.
Outside of his day-to-day caseload he maintains memberships in several professional groups. He is active in the Asian American Bar Association and the Houston Young Lawyers Association. He also participates in alumni relations through Kappa Sigma. Those affiliations keep him connected to peers and to developments in local practice.
Nguyen is licensed to practice in Texas. He lives and works in the Houston area and continues to handle matters through Sorrels Law. He currently practices law in Texas and focuses his work on client matters handled through his firm.
