James Morris Vernon is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in both California and Nevada. He was admitted to the California State Bar in 1991 and the Nevada State Bar in 1991. His license status is currently active. Mr. Vernon is a partner at Iglesias & Vernon, a law firm located in Nevada City, California. He has been practicing law for over 35 years, serving clients throughout Northern California and Nevada.
Mr. Vernon earned his Juris Doctor degree from McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at Eastern New Mexico University. In 1992, he obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Tax Law from the Washington College of Law at American University. He furthered his education by earning a Ph.D. in Design and Statistical Analysis of Experimental Human Behavior Therapy Techniques from the University of Alabama in 1993.
Mr. Vernon concentrates his practice in the areas of tax law and business law. He represents individuals and businesses in matters involving business taxes, criminal tax litigation, estate tax planning, income taxes, international taxes, payroll taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, tax appeals, tax audits, and tax planning. His practice also encompasses business law, including business contracts, business dissolution, business finance, business formation, business litigation, franchising, mergers and acquisitions, and partnership and shareholder disputes. His work involves all stages of legal proceedings, including negotiations, litigation, and appeals.
Throughout his career, Mr. Vernon has handled cases in various courts, including the Superior Court of California for the County of Nevada, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He has also appeared before the Nevada Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. Prior to founding his own firm, he worked as an associate at a mid-size litigation firm in Sacramento for five years.
Mr. Vernon is an active member of the State Bar of California and the State Bar of Nevada. He holds membership in the American Bar Association Section of Taxation and the American Bar Association Section of Business Law. He is also a certified mediator through the California Dispute Resolution Council. Mr. Vernon is fluent in English and Spanish, allowing him to serve the diverse communities of Northern California and Nevada effectively.
