About James

James Monast trained first as an undergraduate in economics and English, earning his B.A. from Ohio State University in 1977. He returned to Ohio State for law school and received his J.D. in 1985. Those two disciplines — numbers and narrative — continue to shape how he approaches claims and courtroom work.

His legal career began at the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation in 1985, where he worked as an associate. He spent those early years handling matters arising under the state workers’ comp system. The position gave him day-to-day exposure to claim evaluation, administrative hearings and the statutory framework that governs workplace injury benefits.

In 1988 Monast moved into private practice as an associate at Fullerton Law Office. Two years later he joined Marchese and Monast as an associate and stayed through the firm’s evolution. He became a partner in 1998, a change that reflected his long involvement in workers’ compensation matters and his growing role in running cases and mentoring younger attorneys.

In 2013 he established Monast Law Office and began practicing as a sole practitioner focused on workers’ compensation. Working on his own allowed him to control case strategy and client service more directly. He handles claims from intake through hearings and appeals, and represents injured workers at various stages of the administrative and judicial processes.

Monast is a Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation Law through the Ohio State Bar Association, a credential he has held while practicing in the field. He has maintained bar association memberships for decades, including the Columbus Bar Association and the Ohio Association for Justice, both held since 1987. Those affiliations reflect long-term involvement in the legal community and a steady concentration on workers’ compensation work.

Colleagues and former clients describe him as methodical in case preparation and direct in court. His background in economics also informs his assessment of lost-wage claims and settlements. He tends to favor careful fact development and a clear presentation of medical and vocational issues rather than broad, sweeping arguments.

Today Monast continues to operate Monast Law Office in Ohio, where he represents clients in workers’ compensation matters across the state. His current practice focuses on representing injured workers in claims before the Bureau and in related appeals.
