About James
James Minick is a North Carolina-trained lawyer who built his practice quickly after law school. He earned a J.D. from Charlotte School of Law in 2009 after completing a philosophy degree at Christendom College in 2003. That combination of liberal arts and legal study shaped how he approaches cases: patient fact-gathering followed by an insistence on clear legal analysis.
He began his legal career as an associate at the office of David R. Payne in 2009. The following year he founded Minick Law, P.C., where he took on leadership as managing partner. Early responsibility at a young firm thrust him into courtroom work and case management. Those years shaped the practice that he maintains today.
Minick is admitted to practice in North Carolina and has credentialing to appear before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He maintains memberships in local and national bar organizations, including the Buncombe County Bar Association and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, both since 2009. He is also a member of the Cherokee Nation Bar Association and joined the National College of DUI Defense in 2014. Those affiliations reflect long-standing involvement in professional networks and peer education.
A substantial portion of his work involves impaired-driving matters. He holds a 24-hour DUI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Test certification from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That training underpins courtroom testimony about sobriety testing and investigatory procedures. It also informs defense strategy when evidence turns on field sobriety procedures or roadside stops.
In civil and criminal court, Minick has handled both trials and appellate filings. The firm’s placement in regional courts and his admission to the Fourth Circuit mean he has experience preparing both trial records and briefs for higher court review. He manages the office and directs litigation strategy, while also appearing in hearings and trials.
Clients and colleagues describe him as practical and exacting about procedural detail. He emphasizes preparation for trial and attention to evidentiary issues. That approach is evident in how the firm staffs cases and in the continuing education he pursues.
Minick Law, P.C. operates from multiple offices and lists James Minick as its managing partner. He continues to practice in North Carolina and before the Fourth Circuit, handling DUI defense and related criminal matters as the primary focus of his practice.
