About James J.
James J. Moylan earned his law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 1972 after completing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business in 1969. He combined legal training and business studies early on, a background that informed his initial work in enforcement and regulatory practice.
He began his legal career in 1972 as a trial lawyer in the Division of Enforcement at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. That early experience put him on the front lines of securities enforcement. In 1975 he moved into exchange counsel work, serving as Assistant General Counsel at the Chicago Board Options Exchange. A year later he joined Abramson and Fox as a practicing attorney and also took an adjunct teaching role at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1976.
In 1985 he established a private practice under his own name. That business evolved over time. He later served as partner at Arnstein & Lehr beginning in 1995 and then at Tressler, Soderstrom, Maloney & Priess in 2000. He is now the principal and owner of James J. Moylan and Associates, P.C., returning to a firm structure that carries his name.
Moylan’s bar memberships reflect a multi-jurisdictional practice. He has been a member of the Colorado State Bar since 1972 and joined the Illinois bar and the District of Columbia Bar in 1975. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. He maintains memberships in the American Bar Association and the Northwest Colorado Bar Association.
Alongside private practice he has spent considerable time in the classroom. His teaching roles have included adjunct positions at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, the University of Denver College of Law and Colorado Mountain College. Those appointments span decades and have involved law students at both urban and regional institutions.
Over a long career his work has encompassed securities enforcement, regulatory counseling and civil litigation tied to business and financial matters. He combines courtroom and regulatory experience with teaching and firm leadership. He currently practices as principal of James J. Moylan and Associates, P.C., handling securities and regulatory matters and related civil litigation.
