About James F.
James F. Bennett built a legal career that moves between courtrooms and conference rooms. He trained in law at Vanderbilt University Law School after completing his undergraduate degree at Westminster College. The academic record laid a foundation for work on complex legal questions and for a path that would lead to both appellate chambers and private practice.
Early in his career Bennett spent two highly formative years in judicial chambers. He served as a law clerk to a panel at the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in 1995. A few years later he clerked at the Supreme Court of the United States in 1999. Those clerkships sharpened his grasp of appellate procedure and legal writing. They also exposed him to a wide range of federal issues and to the rhythms of appellate advocacy.
After his clerkship at the Eleventh Circuit he entered private practice as an associate at Bryan Cave in 1997. He made partner at that firm in 2000. The move reflected a transition from junior advocacy to a role that combined case handling with client counseling and trial preparation. In 2006 he became managing partner at Dowd Bennett LLP, taking on leadership responsibilities that extended beyond individual matters. His management role has required him to balance administrative duties with the strategic direction of the firm’s litigation work.
Bennett holds bar memberships in both Missouri and Illinois and maintains an active presence in each jurisdiction. His career has been shaped by both appellate and trial work. His time in the federal clerkships informs how he frames legal questions on appeal, while his years in private practice inform his courtroom strategy at the trial level. He has worked on cases that traverse state and federal courts and has handled matters that require coordinating teams across different offices.
Today he practices at Dowd Bennett LLP, where he continues to lead teams handling litigation in multiple forums. He splits professional time between overseeing firm operations and engaging in casework. He represents clients in Missouri and Illinois courts and remains active in state bar circles. His current practice centers on litigation in Missouri and Illinois.
