About James Estes
James Estes Cocke took a conventional path into the law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt University in 1968, studying business and psychology. He then completed his legal education at the University of Tennessee College of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1973. Those formative years set the stage for a long career practicing in Tennessee and in the federal courts that cover the region.
Cocke has been active in the legal profession for more than five decades. He is admitted to practice in Tennessee and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Over that span he has worked through changes in courts, rules and technology. He has also seen shifts in how clients approach dispute resolution. The longevity of his career reflects steady work in state and federal forums rather than a string of headline-making moments.
His practice has involved representation at both trial and appellate levels. He appears in state court matters across Tennessee and has handled appeals that reach the Sixth Circuit. That combination means he is familiar with courtroom procedures, appellate briefing and the different strategic demands each forum imposes. He has also counseled clients on procedural and evidentiary questions that arise as cases move from trial to appeal.
Colleagues describe Cocke as methodical and exacting in his work. He prepares filings carefully and expects the same discipline in the teams he works with. That attention to detail is practical rather than performative. It is reflected in how he drafts pleadings, frames legal arguments and anticipates procedural hurdles. He tends to prioritize clarity in written work and to set realistic timelines for litigation tasks.
James Cocke practices at East Ridge Legal. There he continues to represent clients in matters that touch both state law and federal appellate jurisdiction. His work remains rooted in courtroom and appellate practice. He handles filings, oral arguments and client counseling from that office.
Now in the later decades of his career, Cocke continues to take on matters in Tennessee courts and before the Sixth Circuit, applying decades of courtroom and appellate experience to current disputes. He currently practices at East Ridge Legal, where his work centers on state and federal litigation and appellate matters.
