About James C.
James C. Sproat built his formal training at the University of South Carolina, where he earned a B.A. in political science in 2008 and returned two decades later for an MBA, completed in 2023. Between those degrees he attended the University of Cincinnati College of Law and received his J.D. in 2011. The combination of law and business study shapes how he approaches case strategy and client communication.
After law school, Sproat entered practice and by 2015 was working at The Hawkins Law Office. That period gave him courtroom experience and time handling contested matters. He later joined Chappell Smith & Arden, P.A. in 2022 and then moved to Smith, Born, Leventis, Taylor & Vega, LLC in 2023. Those moves traced a path from smaller office work to a firm where he handles a broader docket and collaborates with other litigators.
Sproat is admitted to practice in the State of South Carolina and in the Federal District Court. He participates in trial practice and filing in both state and federal venues. His courtroom work includes pretrial motion practice, discovery disputes and hearings, and he regularly files pleadings in federal matters when cases cross that threshold.
Outside the courtroom he engages with professional groups that align with his case work. He is a member of the South Carolina Association for Justice and the American Association for Justice. He also belongs to Injured Workers Advocates and the American Inns of Court. Those memberships provide continuing education and practical exchanges about litigation tactics, medical evidence, and evolving case law.
Professionally, Sproat takes on cases stemming from workplace injuries and personal injury incidents. He represents injured workers and other plaintiffs in claims that can involve complicated medical records, vocational assessments, and dispute over benefits or damages. He handles settlement negotiations and, when necessary, takes cases to trial. His business training informs how he evaluates damages and structures settlement proposals.
Since joining Smith, Born, Leventis, Taylor & Vega, LLC in 2023, Sproat has continued to develop his litigation practice. He represents clients in both state and federal court and focuses primarily on personal injury and workers' compensation matters.
