About Jack T.
Jack T. Carney earned his J.D. from Tulane University School of Law in 1998. He left law school at a time when elder law was just beginning to take shape as a distinct practice area. He moved into practice in the Southeast and has been licensed to work in Alabama.
Early in his career Carney joined Sirote & Permutt, P.C. as a lawyer in 2001. He spent his early years at the firm handling client matters typical of a mid-size practice. Those years provided steady courtroom exposure and day-to-day counseling experience for clients navigating wills, trusts and long-term care planning.
Carney pursued specialization in elder law and earned certification as a Certified Elder Law Lawyer (CELA) from the National Elder Law Foundation. That credential is awarded to attorneys who meet specific experience and peer-review standards in matters affecting older adults and people with disabilities. The certification signals a level of specialized training and practice in the field.
He has been a member of the Birmingham Bar Association since 2002 and remains active in that professional community. Membership in the local bar has kept him engaged with changes in Alabama law and procedural practice. It has also provided a regular forum for continuing legal education and collegial exchange with other attorneys in the region.
Carney’s practice reflects the combination of general litigation experience and elder law specialization that marked his early career. He has worked on matters that intersect estate planning, guardianships, Medicaid planning, and probate administration. He approaches cases in a methodical way and places a premium on clear explanations to clients about legal options and likely outcomes.
Today he continues to practice in Alabama. His work centers on elder law and related areas, advising clients on planning and legal steps tied to aging, incapacity, and long-term care needs.
