About J. Robert McAllister

J. Robert McAllister III trained at some of the East Coast's established schools. He earned an A.B. from Davidson College, took an LL.B. at the University of Virginia School of Law, and completed advanced legal study with an LL.M. from Georgetown University. Those degrees set the stage for a long career that crosses public service and private practice.

Early in his professional life he served in the United States Army and held the rank of captain in 1965. After military service he entered the practice of law. Over the decades he has maintained admissions across federal and state forums, including the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, as well as the Virginia bar.

His legal work moved through firm practice into senior advisory roles. He is listed as senior counsel at McCandlish & Lillard P.C., a role that reflects long-standing involvement in complex matters rather than day-to-day firm leadership. Past and present positions show a lawyer who combines litigation access with transactional and regulatory experience.

McAllister's professional associations sketch a picture of particular subject-matter interest. He serves as counsel to the Health Law Section of the American Bar Association, a role he has held since 1998. He is a member of the Business Law Section of his state bar, belongs to the Virginia State Bar's Health Law Section, and is active in the American Health Lawyers Association. Earlier in his career he served on the Board of Governors from 1985 to 1988 and took leadership roles in local and national young lawyer organizations in the mid-1970s, including the American Bar Association's Executive Council for the Young Lawyers Division and chairing the Fairfax County Young Lawyers Division in 1976.

Local civic service intersects with his legal resume. He served on the Arlington County Board of Directors from 1974 until 1982 and was board president in 1980 and 1981. Those posts added public governance experience to a legal career that spans federal court practice and regulatory matters.

Today he practices as senior counsel at McCandlish & Lillard P.C., handling matters in health law and tax-related forums.
