About J.R.

J.R. Fruen earned his law degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2011. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, receiving a B.A. in European Studies and German in 1998, and he spent time studying political science and art history at the Università degli Studi di Padova through the UC Education Abroad Program in 2000. Those years abroad and in diverse academic settings shaped a practical approach to legal problems.

After law school, Fruen entered legal practice in California. He is a member of the California State Bar and maintains an active license to practice in the state. Over time he moved from early associate roles into positions that required him to run operations and manage client work. That mix of hands-on case work and office responsibilities informed his decision to start his own practice.

He founded Marks Matter - SP and runs it as a lawyer and principal. The firm reflects his preference for a small-office setting where decisions are handled directly. Colleagues say he values clarity and direct communication in client matters. Fruen draws on his academic background in European studies and languages when cases touch on cross-cultural issues or international documents, though his practice remains grounded in California law.

Fruen’s practice emphasizes practical problem solving rather than headline cases. He approaches matters with attention to procedure and detail. He prepares filings, advises clients on options available under state law, and manages negotiations when appropriate. He also uses his language skills and time abroad to assist clients who encounter documents or contacts in German or Italian.

Outside the office he keeps ties to academic and professional communities. He maintains membership in the state bar and engages informally with a network of attorneys and advisors in the region. He does not hold public bar leadership positions that are recorded here, but he remains an active participant in professional circles.

He practices from Marks Matter - SP and accepts matters in the California courts and administrative forums. He focuses on legal matters arising under California law.
