About J.D.
J.D. Houvener built a technical foundation before entering law. He earned a B.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Washington in 2007. He then completed an MBA in Entrepreneurship and Business Finance at Seattle University in 2010. Houvener returned to Seattle University for his law degree, taking intellectual property coursework and receiving his J.D. in 2014.
His early career began in engineering. In 2007 he worked as a systems engineer at Boeing. That experience put technical problems and commercial realities on the same table. It also provided the kind of hands-on background patent work often requires.
After law school Houvener became a registered patent lawyer before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He holds USPTO registration number 72087 and also carries a professional engineer license, number 48930. Those credentials anchor both the legal and technical sides of his practice.
Houvener is admitted to practice in Washington and before the Federal Circuit. He maintains memberships in local bar organizations, including the King County Bar Association and the Snohomish County Bar Association. Those connections reflect a practice area tied closely to the Pacific Northwest technology community, even as his firm operates nationally.
He is associated with Bold Patents Law Office, which lists multiple offices across the United States, including Seattle, Chicago, Houston, New York, San Francisco, San Diego, North Carolina and Tampa. His work there spans patent preparation, prosecution and related patent portfolio matters. He counsels inventors, startups and corporate clients on protecting technical innovations and structuring filings to match business objectives.
Houvener’s background in systems engineering gives him fluency with mechanical and systems-oriented inventions. His MBA informs conversations about commercialization, licensing and patent strategy. In practice he often bridges technical teams and outside counsel, translating engineering details into claims and filings.
He continues to live and work in the Pacific Northwest while serving clients across jurisdictions. His day-to-day practice emphasizes patent prosecution and the management of patent portfolios for clients in engineering-driven industries.
He currently practices at Bold Patents Law Office and handles patent prosecution and related intellectual property matters.
