About J. Christopher

J. Christopher Johnsen moved from studying English to practicing law in a steady, deliberate arc. He earned a B.A. in English from DePaul University in 2000, then returned to school to complete both a Juris Doctor and a Master of Laws at The John Marshall Law School in 2007. The dual degrees marked an uncommon academic finish and set the stage for a courtroom-centered career.

During law school he pursued advanced study alongside the J.D., finishing the LL.M. the same year he received his law degree. That combination signaled an interest in deeper legal analysis and an early investment in mastering complex legal issues. His undergraduate background in English also shaped his approach to legal writing and argument—clear prose and attention to structure matter in court documents and briefs.

Johnsen is admitted to practice in Illinois and is a member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. Those admissions allow him to appear in state courts and at the nation’s highest level. Being on the Supreme Court roster is not common among all practitioners. It indicates work that has engaged federal questions or appellate strategy at a significant level.

He has spent his career practicing law in Illinois. Over time he has handled matters that require courtroom presence, written advocacy and client counseling. Sources of work include litigated cases that progress through state systems and those that touch on federal issues. His background equips him to move between drafting pleadings and appearing at hearings.

Colleagues describe him as a careful writer who pays attention to the turn of a phrase. His English degree informs that craftsmanship. The LL.M. added another layer of study, and peers note the benefit of that additional legal scholarship when shaping arguments for judges.

Outside the courtroom he has remained engaged with continuing education and the practical demands of running legal matters. He balances hearings, brief-writing and client meetings. He also maintains the procedural knowledge necessary for appearances at different court levels.

He currently practices in Illinois and appears in both state and federal courts, maintaining a practice that includes appellate and trial matters in those jurisdictions.
