About J. Brent

J. Brent Burney built a local practice in Alabama that has lasted more than two decades. He earned a B.S. from the University of Alabama in 1992 and completed his law degree at Cumberland School of Law, Samford University, in 1995. Those years set the course for a career spent largely in the courtroom.

Soon after earning his J.D., Burney joined the Alabama State Bar in 1995. He added membership in the Morgan County Bar and the Alabama Association for Justice that same year. In 2000 he joined the American Association for Justice and has maintained that affiliation since. He is admitted to practice in Alabama and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.

Burney began working as a trial lawyer in 1996. He established his practice under the name Burney & Burney and has operated there since. Early years were marked by steady courtroom work. He moved from initial cases to a steady schedule of trials, taking on matters that required in-court advocacy and a readiness to try cases before judges and juries.

Colleagues describe him as someone who prefers the practical side of litigation. He spends much of his time preparing evidence, taking and defending depositions, and managing the requirements of trial practice. He is active in bar organizations that focus on civil trial procedures and professional standards. That engagement keeps him connected to developments in trial advocacy and state-level procedural rules.

Clients and other lawyers see him as an experienced courtroom practitioner rather than a legal generalist. His admissions to the state bar and to federal court in the Northern District of Alabama give him the procedural range to handle matters that must be litigated at both state and federal levels. He has remained a local presence through membership in the Morgan County Bar and by preserving a practice based in the same community where he built his career.

Over time his practice has stayed consistent in one respect: trial work. He has balanced case preparation with courtroom appearances and continued participation in professional organizations. He continues to maintain his bar memberships and his federal court admission. He currently practices trial law at Burney & Burney.
