About Herbert

Herbert Lazerow took a conventional path into the academy, marked by three degrees from prestigious institutions. He began at the University of Pennsylvania, earned his undergraduate A.B. in 1960, then moved on to Harvard for a J.D. in 1963 and completed an LL.M. at George Washington University in 1964. Those credentials laid the groundwork for a long career in legal education.

After completing graduate work in Washington, D.C., Lazerow entered a world that blends instruction and scholarship. He found a professional home at the USD School of Law, where he serves as a professor of law. His role centers on teaching law students and participating in the intellectual life of the law school. Over the years he has guided students through doctrinal study and the practical demands of legal training.

Lazerow’s academic record reflects steady engagement with the tasks universities set for their faculty. He has taught courses, advised students, and taken part in faculty governance and curriculum development. Those activities are the daily business of a law professor. They require keeping current with legal developments and shaping how future lawyers understand the law.

Colleagues and former students typically describe the work of a long-standing professor in terms that emphasize continuity. That description fits Lazerow. He represents an older generation of legal scholars who entered teaching after substantial classroom and graduate work. His combination of an Ivy League law degree and a Washington LL.M. has informed both classroom discussion and scholarly pursuits. He has been involved in mentoring students preparing for bar exams, clerkships, and practice, and has participated in the kinds of departmental and university committees that sustain a law school.

As of 2026 Lazerow remains on the faculty at the USD School of Law. He continues to teach and to conduct legal research at the law school, where his work is part of the institution’s broader educational mission.
