About Heather A.

Heather A. Melone took an unconventional path into criminal law. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1997. That undergraduate background preceded a decision to pursue law. She received her J.D. from California Western School of Law in 2005, where she concentrated on criminal law and completed her legal education in the mid-2000s.

After law school, Melone moved into criminal practice in California. Over the years she has worked on cases in state courts and handled matters that touch on both trial work and case preparation. She represents individuals facing a range of criminal charges, and she has experience managing pretrial investigations, drafting motions, and negotiating at various stages of a case. Her training at California Western, which emphasized criminal law, laid the groundwork for the practical courtroom skills she later developed.

Melone is active in several legal organizations. She holds memberships in the American Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She is also a member of California Lawyers for Criminal Justice and the San Diego County Bar Association. Her professional affiliations extend to the American Association for Justice and the Better Business Bureau. These memberships reflect the professional networks she maintains and the continuing legal education she pursues.

Her undergraduate study in environmental issues gives her a different perspective compared with many who enter criminal practice directly from other undergraduate fields. That background informs how she approaches evidence, regulatory context, and fact patterns that occasionally overlap with environmental or regulatory concerns. She applies analytical skills from both degrees when evaluating complex records and when preparing for trial or plea negotiations.

Colleagues describe Melone as thorough in case preparation and deliberate in courtroom settings. She balances attention to detail with an eye toward practical outcomes for clients. In court she has worked on motions, evidentiary hearings, and jury trials, and outside the courtroom she focuses on client counseling and case strategy. She also engages in local bar activities and continuing education offered through the organizations to which she belongs.

Melone practices in California and maintains an active criminal practice addressing matters from early-stage investigations through trial and post-conviction proceedings. She currently practices criminal defense in California.
