About H. Joel
H. Joel Newman earned a B.A. in Labor Studies from Wayne State University in 1981 and went on to receive his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1985. He built a practice grounded in traditional litigation training and formal legal education. Those early years set the pattern for a long career in courtroom work and commercial disputes.
Newman entered private practice in 1985 as a business litigation lawyer at Carson, Fischer, Potts and Hyman. He left to help launch Hyman Lippitt in 1991, where he served as a founding partner. Two decades later he established his own firm, H. Joel Newman, PLLC, in 2011. The path from associate to founding partner is reflected in the variety of roles he has held and the steady focus on civil litigation that has marked his work.
He is admitted to practice in Michigan and in several federal forums, including the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Those admissions have allowed him to handle cases at trial and on appeal, representing plaintiffs and defendants in business disputes and property-related matters.
Newman’s practice centers on business litigation and disputes that touch on real property and commercial arrangements. He has handled contract cases, landlord-tenant and real estate disputes, and other matters that arise when companies and individuals clash over business interests. His work often involves contested proceedings in state and federal court, and he has maintained an active trial practice throughout his career.
He is active in the legal community. Newman holds memberships in the State Bar of Michigan, where he is involved in the Master Lawyers, Business Law and Real Property sections. He is also a member of the Oakland County Bar Association and its foundation. National affiliations include the American Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association and the American Constitution Society.
After more than three decades in practice and two firm founding experiences, Newman continues to run a private practice under his own name. He maintains an office in Michigan and handles business litigation and related real property matters for clients in state and federal courts.
