About Gregory M
Gregory M Messer began his professional path in political science before turning to law. He earned a B.S. in political science from Drew University in 1974 and a J.D. from Albany Law School in 1977. Those academic choices led him into a long career in bankruptcy practice and court service.
After law school he gained admission to several federal forums. His admissions include the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Over the years he has appeared in bankruptcy matters across those venues and developed practical courtroom experience in consumer insolvency and related proceedings.
Messer has also served in roles beside the bench. In 2019 he joined the Panel of Mediators for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. In 2022 he served as a mediator for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York. Those assignments placed him in contested and negotiated matters where resolving disputes outside full trials was the aim.
He holds a board certification in consumer bankruptcy law from the American Board of Certification. That credential sits alongside long-standing memberships in professional organizations. Messer is a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers and the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, where he is listed in the President’s Circle. He has been part of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York since 1996 and has belonged to the Brooklyn Bar Association since 1980. The American Bar Association lists him as a member since 1979.
His community work has included a leadership role in a volunteer legal project. Messer served as treasurer of the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, Inc. from 2005 until 2021. That post involved oversight of finances for a non-profit project that connects lawyers with clients in need of affordable legal help.
Messer practices from the Law Office of Gregory Messer PLLC. His work today continues to center on consumer bankruptcy matters, including representation, mediation, and related dispute resolution in federal bankruptcy courts.
