About Grayson

Grayson Cheek earned a B.A. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005 and a J.D. from North Carolina Central University in 2008. He built his legal education on a steady course through two of the state's law schools. Those years laid the foundation for a practice rooted in North Carolina law and public service.

Early in his professional life he became involved in state policy work. In 2016 he was appointed to the Governor's Crime Commission and its Juvenile Justice Committee by Governor McCrory. Two years later Governor Cooper named him again to the same bodies. Those appointments placed him among the advisors who review crime trends, juvenile policy, and recommendations intended for state leaders.

His roles on those commissions required a mix of legal judgment and policy thinking. Members review data, consider legislative proposals, and weigh programmatic responses to challenges facing courts and youth services. Cheek's participation over multiple appointments suggests sustained engagement with criminal justice and juvenile issues at the state level, rather than a single, short-term involvement.

Cheek operates a private practice under the name Grayson H. Cheek, PLLC. Through that office he handles matters that bring together courtroom work and the practical problems clients face in North Carolina. The firm serves a range of local clients and interacts regularly with state agencies and other lawyers across the state. Public appointments and private practice have given him exposure to both policy debates and case-level advocacy.

Colleagues and colleagues' public records point to a lawyer who moves between advocacy and advisory roles. He has taken part in meetings that influence how the state approaches juvenile justice and crime prevention. That dual perspective informs how he approaches cases and client problems: understanding the policy context, while attending to the immediate legal tasks at hand.

He remains licensed in North Carolina and continues to practice through Grayson H. Cheek, PLLC. His current practice concentrates on legal matters arising in North Carolina.
