About Gillis E. (Beau) Powell

Gillis E. (Beau) Powell III began his legal path in the classroom. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of West Florida in 2004. He then attended Mississippi College School of Law, completing his juris doctor in 2011 after beginning law studies in 2008.

Powell’s early legal work included a stint as a law clerk in 2003 at Powell, Powell, & Powell. That role exposed him to courtroom procedure and the day-to-day tasks of trial preparation. After law school he served as an Assistant State Lawyer in 2011 at the Office of the State Lawyer, where he handled trial dockets and gained experience in criminal prosecution.

In 2014 he opened his own practice, Beau Powell, P.A. Running a small firm gave him responsibility for all aspects of legal work — client intake, courtroom advocacy, and case strategy. He represents clients in matters that require courtroom presence and file-level management. The practice has allowed him to shape how cases are handled from arrest through disposition.

Powell is admitted to practice in Florida and in the 1st Circuit. He belongs to local and national professional groups. His memberships include the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Bar Association, the Florida Justice Association, the Young Lawyers Division, and the Society of the Criminal Defense Bar. Those affiliations keep him connected to peers and the evolving practices of criminal defense and trial work.

Colleagues describe him as someone who prefers to let his work speak for itself. He balances trial work with the demands of running a solo firm. Day-to-day that means preparing motions, managing discovery, and representing clients at hearings. He handles the practical realities of a courtroom and the paperwork that precedes it.

Powell’s educational background in criminal justice informs his courtroom approach. He draws on that foundation when evaluating police reports, witness statements, and procedural issues. The combination of prosecutorial experience and private practice gives him perspective on how cases move through the system.

Today he continues to operate Beau Powell, P.A. He maintains an active role in the professional organizations listed above and remains engaged in trial and defense work. His current practice focuses on criminal defense matters in Florida and related proceedings in the 1st Circuit.
