About Gillian Kay
Gillian Garrett is the founding member of Gillian Garrett Law, PC, located in Oakland, California. Established to serve the alcoholic beverage industry, her firm provides specialized legal services in both California and federal alcohol law. Gillian's expertise encompasses many legal areas, including litigation, regulatory representation, trade practices, compliance, and internal investigations. She advises a diverse array of clients—ranging from producers and importers to wholesalers and retailers—ensuring they handle the requirements of alcohol-related regulations effectively. With over 20 years of experience in the field, Gillian has successfully represented hundreds of clients throughout California. Her practice includes mediation and arbitration, as well as representation before key regulatory bodies such as the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), the ABC Appeals Board.

Before founding her firm, Gillian served as senior counsel at Hinman & Carmichael, LLP in San Francisco, where she specialized in alcohol law. Prior to that, she was a litigation associate at Jones Day in Palo Alto, focusing on commercial litigation, internal investigations, and products liability. Earlier in her career, Gillian worked at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker, LLP in Los Angeles. There, she handled complex business litigation matters, including class actions, internal investigations, and issues related to unfair competition and employment law. This diverse background has contributed to her knowledge of the legal field affecting the alcoholic beverage industry. Gillian graduated with honors from Pomona College in 1998 and earned her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2002. She is admitted to practice in both state and federal courts in California. In addition to her legal practice, Gillian is the author of a forthcoming eBook that distills California and federal unfair trade practice laws into a practical guide for businesses operating in the state.
