About Gerald W.

Gerald W. Grimes earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1965. He came of age as a lawyer during a period of change in American law schools and the legal profession. That formative education in New York provided a foundation he carried back to the West.

His legal career reaches back to the mid-1960s. Over the years he has been licensed to practice in Montana, Washington and Hawaii. Maintaining admission in three distinct jurisdictions required adapting to different court systems and local rules. It also meant dividing professional time among mainland and island legal environments.

Grimes’s work has unfolded across many seasons of legal change. He watched federal and state courts evolve, statutes shift, and procedural norms adjust. Those long-term perspectives inform how he approaches matters and explains options to others. He has navigated the practical demands that come with practicing law in geographically and culturally varied places.

Columbia’s law program left him with both analytical tools and contacts that shaped his early steps. As his practice developed, he continued to rely on that training while responding to local legal landscapes. He pursued cases and matters that required steady attention to precedent and procedure. He also handled the routine but important tasks that sustain a legal practice: filings, client communication and courtroom appearances when needed.

Licensure in Montana, Washington and Hawaii reflects a career that has moved across state lines. Practicing in those jurisdictions has required fluency in different local practices and an awareness of regional legal priorities. It has also called for logistical flexibility, since counsel and courts in these areas operate on different calendars and professional rhythms.

Today Grimes remains an active presence in the bar rolls for the states where he is admitted. He continues to apply the legal judgment he developed over decades of practice. Colleagues and those who have worked with him note his familiarity with court procedure and his steady handling of matters that span jurisdictions. He currently practices law in Montana, Washington and Hawaii.
