About Gerald Edward Harmon

Gerald Edward Harmon Jr. began his academic journey in Columbia, South Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from the University of South Carolina in 1994. A decade later he returned to the same campus and completed his Juris Doctor at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2004. Those two degrees anchor a career that mixes technical background and legal training.

After law school, Harmon moved into positions that brought him closer to the bench. In 2007 he served as a judicial clerk in the South Carolina Judicial System. That year provided a ground-level view of courtroom procedure and judicial decision-making. The clerkship also offered practical experience in legal research and opinion drafting under the oversight of sitting judges.

In 2008 he joined the South Carolina Air National Guard as a judge advocate. He has continued in that role to the present. In the Guard he advises commanders and supports service members on legal matters related to military law and administrative processes. The role requires balancing civilian legal practice with military obligations and often involves counseling on rights, disciplinary proceedings, and regulatory compliance.

Harmon is admitted to practice in the State of South Carolina and has credentials to appear before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Those admissions reflect experience across trial-level work in state courts and appellate-level matters in federal courts. He has worked on cases that require both persuasive briefing and oral argument in appellate settings.

His background in computer information systems informs a practical approach to complex factual records and technical issues that arise in litigation. That technical grounding can be useful in cases that touch on technology, evidence management, or electronic records, though his practice spans a range of legal matters.

Harmon balances public service and private practice. The combination of a judicial clerkship and long-standing military legal service has shaped how he approaches cases and client counseling. He has maintained an active role in the legal community in South Carolina while also meeting the responsibilities of a judge advocate.

He currently concentrates on state-court matters in South Carolina and handles appellate work in the Fourth and Federal Circuits.
