About Gary M

Gary M Wilson trained first as a student of social systems and the law. He earned a B.A. from Michigan State University in criminal justice, psychology and history in 1984, then returned to MSU for a J.D., awarded in 1988. He later completed a graduate certificate in the Career Prosecutor Course at the University of Houston–Downtown in 1991.

He began his career in criminal justice at a time when DUI law was changing rapidly. Early training included the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing program, where he completed the certified course that remains a foundation of SFST practice. Over the years he moved between courtrooms and classrooms. He has taught other lawyers and law enforcement about impaired driving investigations and courtroom strategy.

Memberships and organizational roles have been a steady part of his professional life. He serves as vice president of the Michigan Association of OWI Lawyers and has sat on its board since 2011. He is a sustaining member and state delegate for the National College for DUI Defense, a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association, and a life member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also participates in the Criminal Defense Lawyers of Michigan as a faculty member and holds membership in the LGBTQ Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

His courtroom work centers on cases that involve impaired driving, though his criminal defense practice handles a range of misdemeanor and felony charges. He is experienced in the mechanics of breath and blood testing, field sobriety evidence and cross-examination of police witnesses. He combines that technical background with trial experience, often pressing evidentiary issues at pretrial hearings and jury trials.

Colleagues and peers know him for a steady, instructional approach when training others. He frequently presents to defense groups and law enforcement on evolving DUI science, investigative technique and case law developments. That teaching role informs his case work; it also helps shape how he prepares witnesses and frames expert testimony.

He practices from Wilson Law and is licensed in Michigan and Massachusetts. He represents clients in criminal and impaired driving matters and continues to teach and advocate on issues related to DUI and OWI defense.
