About Fred A.
Fred A. Nickl trained first as a criminal justice student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, earning his B.A. in 1995. He moved on to DePaul University College of Law and took his J.D. in 1998. The combination of a local undergraduate education and a Chicago law degree set the stage for a career that moved quickly into courtroom work.
His early years were spent in public service. In 1998 he served as a Lee County State's Lawyer, and the following year he joined the McHenry County Public Defender’s office. Those roles put him in front of juries and judges almost immediately. He left public defense for private practice in 2004, when he joined Brenner, Ford, Monroe & Scott, Ltd. The experience there broadened his exposure to trial litigation and courtroom procedure.
By 2010 he was a partner at Williams & Nickl, LLC. The partnership established his presence in private practice and gave him a platform for handling serious criminal matters and contested trials. He also stepped into the classroom. In 2012 he served as an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, bringing practical courtroom experience to law students and younger attorneys.
Nickl maintains active memberships in several federal trial bars. He is part of the Trial Bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and holds membership in the Northern District of Indiana. Those admissions reflect a practice that extends beyond state court to federal litigation. He is licensed in Illinois and retains an inactive license in Wisconsin.
Colleagues describe him as steady in the courtroom and direct in his presentations. He has handled cases from initial hearings through trial, and he is familiar with both the procedural mechanics and the tactical decisions that shape a criminal case. His background in public defense informs his approach to client representation, while his years in private practice provide experience in managing complex, contested matters.
Clients come to him for trial experience and courtroom preparedness. He continues to handle federal and state criminal matters, represents clients at jury trials, and advises on pretrial strategy. He practices from Williams & Nickl, LLC, and keeps a caseload centered on criminal defense, federal and state trial work, and counsel in serious criminal matters.
