About Esther

Esther Contreras built her path in law after studies in Illinois and the Midwest. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in French and International Studies from Northwestern University in 1998. She returned to the state for law school and received her J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law in 2005.

Her early career led to a partnership at Masuda Funai Eifert & Mitchell, Ltd. in 2008. Colleagues remember her as a lawyer who moved quickly from associate responsibilities to firm leadership. Her role as partner expanded her work on corporate clients and their cross-border concerns. Over time she took on more matters that intersected business operations and immigration compliance.

Contreras is admitted to practice in Illinois. She is active in professional groups that reflect both her practice interests and community connections. She holds memberships in the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Hispanic National Bar Association. She is also involved with the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law. Locally, she serves on the University of Illinois College of Law Alumni Board and participates in The Alumni Society.

Her practice draws on a combination of transactional and regulatory experience. She handles employer-sponsored immigration cases and advises businesses on hiring and compliance for noncitizen workers. She has worked on visa petitions, labor certification matters, and client responses to government inquiries. The work often requires coordination across legal and human-resources teams, and she has steered firms and companies through those processes.

Clients and colleagues describe her approach as pragmatic. She lays out options, explains likely timelines, and identifies administrative requirements. Her background in international studies and language complements the immigration work, especially when business plans involve overseas transfers or recruitment.

Outside billable hours she stays engaged with the legal community through alumni work and bar association activities. That involvement gives her a steady channel to legal developments and practical exchanges among peers. She remains at Masuda Funai Eifert & Mitchell, Ltd., where her current practice focuses on immigration and business-related immigration compliance matters.
