About Erik
Erik F. Hansen is the managing partner at Burns & Hansen, P.A., a prominent law firm located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With over two decades of legal experience, Erik specializes in complex civil litigation, appellate advocacy, and business transactions. His practice areas are diverse, encompassing business law, appeals, and real estate. Admitted to the Minnesota State Bar in 2000, he has litigated multi-million dollar cases in both state and federal courts, not only across Minnesota but also on a national scale. Throughout his career, Erik has successfully argued over eighty cases before state and federal appellate courts.
This experience gave him a understanding of the intricacies involved in appellate procedures. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2000, where he distinguished himself as a Dean’s List student. Prior to that, Erik completed his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and European Studies at the University of Minnesota-Morris in 1997, graduating with honors and distinction. In addition to his legal practice, Erik has been actively involved in the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA). He served as Chair of the Appellate Law Section from 2014 to 2015, contributing to the development of appellate law in Minnesota. For a decade, he was a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Appellate Procedure.
He played a crucial role in shaping the rules that govern appellate practice in the state. Erik is also a frequent speaker at appellate continuing legal education courses, sharing his expertise with fellow attorneys. Erik's professional achievements have not gone unnoticed. He has been named a Super Lawyer or a Rising Star each year since 2006, showcasing his reputation within the legal community. In 2016, he was honored as Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer, evidence of his dedication and skill in the field. Additionally, he is a Senior Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society.
Beyond his professional commitments, Erik is deeply invested in community service. He serves on the Rethos Board as the Main Street Committee Chair, advising on initiatives aimed at preserving historic buildings. Furthermore, he is a member of the Mitchell Lake Association Board, where he contributes to local environmental efforts. In his personal life, Erik enjoys coaching youth soccer, traveling, and hiking, reflecting his belief in the importance of community and the outdoors.
