Emily Barnes Cole is an attorney with over 28 years of experience, specializing in criminal law and alternative prosecution methods. Admitted to practice in Illinois, New Jersey, and New York, she has made significant contributions to the legal field. In Illinois, she has been a member of the Illinois State Bar since 1998. Her New Jersey admission dates back to 1997, the same year she became a member of the New York State Bar. Ms. Cole earned her Juris Doctor from the City University of New York School of Law, laying the foundation for her impactful career. Beginning her legal journey in 1998, Ms.
Cole served as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Cook County, Illinois. Her initial role provided her with invaluable courtroom experience and insight into the details of criminal law. Over the years, she took on increasing responsibilities, ultimately becoming the Supervisor of the Alternative Prosecution and Sentencing Unit. In this capacity, she oversees Assistant State’s Attorneys managing cases in 19 problem-solving courts, including drug, mental health, and veteran’s courts, as well as 10 deferred prosecution courts. Ms. Cole has been instrumental in developing and implementing alternative prosecution programs aimed at rehabilitating offenders.
