About Elliot G.
Elliot G. Hicks built a legal foundation across several institutions before entering practice. He studied politics at Washington & Lee University in 1974 and earned a B.A. in political science and sociology from West Virginia University in 1976. He then completed his legal education at West Virginia University College of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1981.
After law school, Hicks was admitted to practice in West Virginia and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. His career has unfolded largely within the state, and his docket has included both trial and appellate work. He has handled matters in state courts and in federal appellate proceedings, bringing courtroom experience to cases that proceed beyond the trial level.
Hicks took on leadership roles within the local legal community. In 1998 he served as President of the West Virginia State Bar. That year he was the organization’s elected leader, a position that placed him at the center of professional governance for the state’s lawyers.
Professional peers have acknowledged his trial work. He became a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2007. He also joined the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel that same year. These affiliations reflect sustained participation in groups oriented to trial practice and defense representation.
Across decades of practice, Hicks has combined courtroom work with involvement in professional organizations. He has maintained offices in Charleston, where he manages litigation that ranges from state-court disputes to appeals heard in the Fourth Circuit. Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who remains active in both trial settings and appellate advocacy.
As of 2026, Hicks continues to practice from his Charleston offices and handles trial and appellate matters in West Virginia and before the Fourth Circuit.
