About Dustin

Dustin Smith began his academic path at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in History in 2002. He went on to study law at The John Marshall Law School, earning his Juris Doctor in 2007. Those years framed an interest in legal questions rooted in public institutions and private dispute resolution.

After law school, Smith entered practice in Illinois. He is licensed to practice in the state and has built a career grounded in the regional legal community. Over time he has worked on matters that require courtroom presence as well as careful case preparation. Colleagues describe him as thorough in his file work and steady in litigation settings.

Smith's training in history has influenced how he approaches facts and timelines. He pays close attention to records and to the arc of events that produce legal issues. That approach shows up in the way he prepares cases and counsels clients. He balances attention to detail with an awareness of practical outcomes for those he represents.

In day-to-day practice he spends time drafting pleadings, handling discovery, and appearing in hearings. He is comfortable in both negotiation settings and contested proceedings. His clients range from individuals to small businesses, reflecting the mix of work typical for attorneys practicing across Illinois.

Smith is part of a small-firm environment, where attorneys often handle multiple aspects of a matter. That setting requires an ability to move between substantive legal research, client counseling, and procedural work. He has developed habits that help manage those demands: careful calendaring, clear client updates, and methodical file organization.

Outside of court and client work, Smith keeps up with continuing legal education and local legal developments. He follows changes in Illinois rules and decisions that affect practice. Staying current helps him adapt strategies and provide practical advice that responds to new law and shifting procedural landscapes.

Today, Smith practices at Gruszeczki & Smith Law, LLP, where he represents clients in matters across the firm’s scope of work in Illinois. He continues to serve clients through the firm in the Illinois courts and related administrative processes.
