About Douglas Ralph

Douglas Ralph Williams built his legal foundation at Washington & Lee University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in 2000. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Florida State University College of Law in 2005. Those years set the stage for a practice that crosses state and federal lines.

After law school, Williams began his career clerking for Judge Philip J. Padovano at the Florida First District Court of Appeal. That clerkship gave him a close view of appellate decision-making and the mechanics of written opinion. It also informed his later work on appeals and complex litigation.

Williams moved into private practice and worked at firms that handled maritime and personal injury matters. He spent time at Lau, Lane, Pieper, Conley & McCreadie, PA, and later at Nielsen Shields, PLLC. Each stop added courtroom time and trial preparation experience. Over the years he built a practice that combines trial work, appellate briefing, and federal litigation.

He is admitted to practice in several jurisdictions, including Washington, Florida, and the District of Columbia. His admissions extend to federal appellate practice as well; he is admitted to the United States Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit. Those credentials allow him to handle matters that move beyond state trial courts.

Williams maintains memberships in professional organizations that reflect his subject-matter interests. He belongs to the Maritime Law Association of the United States and the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Washington State Association for Justice and is listed in the Order of the Coif. These affiliations keep him connected to developments in maritime law and litigation practice.

Today he practices at BoatLaw, LLP. His work continues to center on cases that involve boats, waterways, and related liability issues. His background on appeal and in federal court informs how he prepares cases for trial and beyond. He handles litigation, counsels clients on risk and insurance questions, and appears in state and federal forums when disputes escalate.

Williams balances courtroom duties with research and briefing. He draws on appellate experience to shape trial strategy and on maritime practice to advise clients in incidents on the water. He currently practices maritime and admiralty law at BoatLaw, LLP.
