About Douglas R.
Douglas R. Hoffman earned his law degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2006, after completing undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he read political science and took a minor in German. He entered the legal profession in the mid-2000s and built a career that has moved between private practice and public service.
He began his professional career in private practice as an associate at Black, Ballard, McDonald, P.C. in 2006. That early experience placed him in a firm setting where he handled client matters under the supervision of seasoned practitioners. A few years later he shifted into public prosecution. In 2011 he joined the Jefferson County State’s Lawyer’s Office in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, first as an assistant and then advancing to the position of State’s Lawyer in 2012. Those years in the county prosecutor’s office involved courtroom work, case preparation and the kinds of day-to-day decision-making that come with litigating for the state.
After serving in the prosecutor’s office, Hoffman returned to private practice. By 2017 he was listed as a lawyer at Mitchell Law Office, P.C. That role reflected a return to representing private clients and operating within a civil practice environment distinct from his prior prosecutorial duties. Across both public and private roles he has handled matters that require appearances in state and federal tribunals.
Hoffman is admitted to practice in Illinois and holds federal bar credentials that permit him to appear in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He also is admitted in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Illinois. Those admissions indicate a practice that crosses jurisdictional lines and a familiarity with procedural requirements in both trial and appellate settings.
Colleagues and court records show a career built on courtroom experience and steady movement between different areas of practice rather than a single specialty. He has worked under the pressures of county-level prosecutions and the client-centered demands of private firm practice. That combination has given him firsthand exposure to litigation strategy, evidence handling and the deadlines that shape court calendars.
As of 2026 he is associated with Mitchell Law Office, P.C., and his current work involves handling matters in state and federal courts, including bankruptcy matters and appellate filings when they arise.
