After passing the bar exams in Ohio and Florida, Doug began his legal career in Niles, Ohio, in 1977. He initially joined Attorney R. Clare Westenfield's practice, and after Attorney Westenfield's passing, Doug continued the firm as a solo practitioner. His legal expertise encompassed business contracts, estate administration, real estate transactions, and probate litigation. He also served as general counsel for Security Dollar Bank from 1978 to 1990 and was the Law Director for the City of Niles from 1980 to 1983. Doug was deeply involved in community service.
He contributed to organizations such as the United Way, Boy Scouts of America, the Niles Historical Society, Residential Horizons, SCOPE, and the Niles Rotary Club. He also served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and choir member at First Christian Church in Niles. His commitment to the community was evident in his active participation in local events and initiatives. In his personal life, Doug married Billie Jane Porter on March 9, 1974. Together, they had four children: Benjamin W — Neuman, Ph.D., Jacob T. Neuman, Rebecca G. Neuman, and Samuel D — Neuman.
They also had three grandchildren: Isaac, Theia, and Vegas. Doug passed away peacefully on May 13, 2023, at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy of legal expertise and community involvement.
