About Donny K

Donny K Samporna built a bridge from machines to law. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the Pacific in 2007 and went on to receive a J.D. from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 2016, where he concentrated in intellectual property law. The technical training remains a steady reference point in his legal work.

His practical legal experience began while he was still in law school. In 2014 he worked as a law clerk at The Law Offices of Robert H. Lynn, gaining early exposure to client intake and patent-related workflows. After graduation he joined MU Patents in 2016 as a technical analyst and writer. That role asked him to translate engineering concepts into written materials that paired technical accuracy with legal relevance.

Samporna moved into firm practice the following year. In 2017 he became a patent lawyer at Insigne LLP, handling patent prosecution and related client counsel. His time there expanded his experience drafting applications and responding to office actions. In 2021 he joined Haley Guiliano LLP as a patent lawyer. At Haley Guiliano he continues to represent inventors and companies in matters tied to patent drafting and prosecution.

Colleagues point to Samporna’s engineering background as the throughline of his career. The mechanical engineering degree gives him a working familiarity with product design and mechanical systems, which he applies when assessing patentability and preparing technical descriptions for patent filings. He has also taken on leadership roles in the bar community. Since 2015 he has served as president of the Intellectual Property Law Association, a role that has involved organizing programming and engaging peers on procedural and substantive IP topics.

His practice style blends technical precision and procedural attention. He regularly prepares patent applications, responds to examiner rejections, and advises clients on disclosure and claim drafting. He has experience working with inventors across stages of development, from early concept through prosecution. He is admitted to practice in California and maintains his office at Haley Guiliano LLP.

He currently focuses his practice on patent prosecution and advising clients on patent-related matters.
