About Donald Knuckey
Donald Knuckey Jr. earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 2008. He began a legal career that would take him into private practice and into the federal appellate arena. His training in Detroit set the foundation for work in Illinois courts and on appeal in the Seventh Circuit.
In 2014 Knuckey established a solo practice under his own name. Running a one-person firm has meant handling every aspect of client work. He manages intake, case strategy, filings and courtroom appearances. The firm name listed for that practice is Donald Knuckey Jr Lawyer at Law. That step put him squarely into the daily grind of small-firm practice and into matters that require appearances in both state and federal forums.
Knuckey is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Those admissions allow him to represent clients in state trial courts as well as to take appeals to the federal appellate level. Appearing in the Seventh Circuit requires attention to appellate procedure and federal rules. His practice has therefore had to balance trial work with appellate briefs and argument preparation.
Running a solo office also means adapting to changing court practices. Over time he has navigated the administrative and procedural demands that small firms face. That includes managing discovery schedules, responding to motion practice and coordinating with clients on litigation timelines. The work can be technical, and it often requires maintaining steady contact with clients through each phase of a matter.
Outside the courtroom, his background reflects the standard trajectory of lawyers who move from law school into private practice. He has built a practice profile since launching his solo office in 2014 and has maintained courtroom access through his Illinois and Seventh Circuit admissions. The day-to-day work of a solo lawyer demands both attention to detail and an ability to switch between roles—from researcher to advocate to manager of the client relationship.
As of 2026 Knuckey continues to operate his solo practice and to accept matters that require representation in Illinois courts and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He currently focuses his practice on matters brought in those forums.
