About Donald J.
Donald J. Kaufman has practiced law in Colorado for more than three decades. He has balanced courtroom work, teaching and small-business ventures. That combination has shaped a career rooted in workers' compensation and local community involvement.
Kaufman earned his J.D. from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 1995. Before law school he completed a broad undergraduate program at the University of Colorado Boulder, graduating in 1987 with a B.A. that covered economics, music, history and math. The mix of disciplines helps explain his parallel interests in legal work and music-related business activities.
He opened his own practice in 1995, operating under the name Donald J. Kaufman, Lawyer at Law and also as part of Kaufman & Kaufman, LLC. Those early years established him as a recurring presence in Colorado workers' compensation matters. In 2008 he formed Kaufman Colorado Workers Compensation Law Center, LLC to consolidate those efforts and provide a more focused platform for claimants and employers navigating administrative proceedings.
Kaufman's career has taken several turns beyond the office. He is listed as an owner of Defiance Stringband, LLC, begun in 2008, reflecting ongoing ties to the local music scene. In 2013 he joined Colorado Mountain College as a professor of law. Colleagues and students remember him for a straightforward classroom style and practical orientation, favoring case analysis and procedural realities over theory.
On the practice side, Kaufman regularly appears in Colorado forums that handle workers' compensation cases, including proceedings before the Colorado Office of Administrative Courts. He also maintains standing to practice in state courts across Colorado. He operates his practice from an office at Penrose Plaza, where he handles intake, hearings and client consultations.
His work over the years has combined case preparation, administrative advocacy and occasional classroom instruction. He has run small legal enterprises alongside partnerships and solo practice. That experience gives him a practical sense of how claims move from initial filings to resolution in Colorado's systems.
He currently concentrates his practice on Colorado workers' compensation matters.
