Born and raised in Ogden, Utah, Deven demonstrated athletic prowess from a young age. His dedication to football earned him a scholarship to Brigham Young University (BYU), where he played as an offensive tackle for the BYU Cougars during the late 1980s. This experience not only developed his competitive spirit but also instilled in him the values of teamwork and perseverance. While pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Psychology at BYU, he also worked as a youth counselor for the Utah Department of Youth Corrections, gaining valuable insights into the challenges faced by young individuals in the legal system. After completing his undergraduate studies, Deven attended Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon, where he graduated in 1994.
He was admitted to the Oregon State Bar the same year and quickly established himself in the legal community. Initially focusing on criminal law in Portland, he built a solid foundation in legal practice before making the decision to return to Utah in 1997. Upon his return, he joined Arnold, Wadsworth & Coggins, where he has since become a key figure in the firm.
