About Derek

Derek Miller built his legal foundations at Rutgers. He earned a B.A. in History and Political Science at Rutgers University — New Brunswick/Piscataway in 2004, then continued his studies at Rutgers School of Law–Camden, receiving his J.D. in 2010. Those years gave him a steady grounding in constitutional and statutory frameworks. He moved from the classroom into public service soon after graduation.

He began his career in state government in 2010, joining the New Jersey Office of the Lawyer General as a deputy lawyer general. The role placed him in the middle of state legal work, handling matters on behalf of public agencies and working alongside senior counsel on litigation and advisory assignments. That early exposure to the mechanics of state law and administrative practice shaped the way he approaches legal problems.

Since 2010 he has maintained active professional memberships. Colleagues describe him as methodical in his preparation and pragmatic in court. He spent those formative professional years learning how to manage complex files, draft pleadings and motions, and advise clients on regulatory issues. His time in government also offered frequent contact with opposing counsel, judges and agency officials, experience that informs his perspective in private practice.

Miller later moved into private practice and now works at Lackey & Miller, LLC. At the firm he represents clients within New Jersey’s legal system, drawing on his background in public-sector law. His work includes courtroom appearances and written advocacy, as well as counseling clients on procedural and statutory matters. He speaks plainly and aims to clarify the stakes for those he represents.

Outside of casework he continues to follow developments in state law closely. He reads opinions and administrative rulings, and he treats precedent as a practical tool rather than abstract authority. That attitude shapes how he prepares arguments and how he advises clients about risk, timing and likely outcomes.

He remains licensed to practice in New Jersey and maintains an office through Lackey & Miller, LLC. His current practice focuses on matters arising under New Jersey law.
