About Derek E.
Derek E. Karchner began his academic journey in political science at the University of Richmond before earning his law degree from The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law. His studies combined an interest in public affairs with legal training. The classroom prepared him for courtroom procedure and the practical work of counseling clients.
After law school, Karchner gained admission to practice in Virginia and to federal court. He is admitted in the U.S. District Court system and specifically in the Eastern District of Virginia. Those credentials allow him to represent clients in both state and federal proceedings and to appear before judges at several levels.
Karchner joined McCandlish & Lillard P.C. as an associate. In that role he handles research, drafts pleadings, and assists in preparing cases for hearings and trials. He works on procedural strategy and client communication, helping to move matters forward through discovery and motion practice.
Colleagues describe him as methodical in his casework and straightforward in his writing. He breaks complex legal questions into clear issues and lays out options for clients. That approach is evident in his courtroom filings and in conferences with opposing counsel and court staff.
His background in political science and law gives him a broad perspective on regulatory and procedural questions. He draws on that combination when evaluating risk and advising clients about possible outcomes. Where matters raise questions of federal procedure, his admissions to the U.S. District Court and the Eastern District of Virginia enable him to pursue relief in the appropriate forum.
He is currently an associate at McCandlish & Lillard P.C. His practice centers on matters in Virginia state courts and in federal courts, including the Eastern District of Virginia.
