About Dereck
Dereck Capaz built his academic foundation across two Florida institutions. He earned a B.A. from the University of Florida before returning to Stetson University for graduate study. He completed an MBA at Stetson and then stayed on to finish a J.D. at Stetson University College of Law. That sequence—arts, business, law—shaped the way he approaches legal questions.
After law school, Capaz moved into practice carrying both business and legal credentials. He has worked in settings where commercial concerns meet legal rules. Over time he has advised clients on matters that require translating business priorities into legal terms and vice versa. His path has taken him through roles that demanded plainspoken explanations and steady document work, as well as courtroom or negotiation appearances when disputes arose.
Capaz’s work reflects an interest in how organizations operate under law. He spends time on transactional work, contract review, corporate governance and regulatory compliance. He also handles disputes when they surface, aiming to resolve them efficiently. Colleagues describe him as pragmatic. Clients tend to value clarity in his written work and brevity in oral explanations. He prefers to break complex problems into manageable parts so decisions can be made with fewer surprises.
Teaching and community involvement have intersected with his practice at times. He has participated in local seminars and panel discussions aimed at business owners and managers. Those events allowed him to explain legal risks in everyday language. He has also written brief guides and memoranda for clients that reduce legalese to actionable steps. He approaches each assignment the same way: identify the core issue, map the relevant law, and present options that a client can act on.
Capaz keeps a steady focus on continuous learning. His dual graduate degrees inform the way he evaluates risk and opportunity. He stays current on changes in state and federal law that affect business operations and contract relationships. His office work blends document drafting with client counseling and periodic advocacy when cases require it. His current practice centers on matters that draw on his combined business and legal training.
