About Denise
Denise Hammond has built a practice that bridges U.S. law and international business. Her studies took her from Beijing and Shanghai to The Hague and Geneva before she completed a J.D. in the United States. That international grounding is a throughline in her education and informs how she approaches cross-border matters today.
Her academic path is broad and intentionally international. She studied Chinese Foreign Investment and Banking Law, Chinese Corporate Law and Commercial Arbitration at Fudan University in Shanghai. At the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing she took courses in Chinese constitutional and administrative law, labor law and environmental law. She spent time studying international criminal law in The Hague and international intellectual property in Geneva. She later earned a J.D. from Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law, completing that degree in 2017.
Hammond’s memberships reflect both local practice and international engagement. She holds current memberships in the Kansas Bar Association, the Topeka Bar Association and the Johnson County Bar Association. She is active in groups that address the professional concerns of women lawyers, including the Association for Women Lawyers and The Kansas Women’s Lawyer Association. She is also a member of the Earl E. O’Connor American Inn of Court. On the international side, she lists affiliation with the United States Council for International Business and the International Chamber of Commerce.
Her practice has included matters that draw on her comparative training. Her background in Chinese corporate and banking law, combined with study in arbitration and international intellectual property, positions her to handle disputes and transactions that involve multiple legal systems. She has worked at Burk-Hammond Law, LLC, where matters have ranged from business counseling to arbitration-related issues. Colleagues describe her approach as methodical; she breaks complex subjects into practical steps for clients.
Outside the office, Hammond’s international studies continue to inform her perspective. She follows developments in international trade, arbitration and cross-border intellectual property protection. She remains an active member of both local Kansas bar groups and international business organizations. Her current practice concentrates on cross-border business, intellectual property, arbitration and corporate matters.
