About Dean

Dean Watts began his path to law at The George Washington University, where he earned a B.A. in journalism in 1992. He stayed in the academic world for a few more years and completed his J.D. at SMU Dedman School of Law in 1996. The combination of a reporting background and legal training shaped a practical approach to facts and narratives that would inform his later work in criminal defense.

After law school he entered private practice. In 1999 he worked as an associate at the Law Office of John Heath. A year later he opened his own solo practice, operating as Dean Watts Lawyer at Law. Over the next years his practice settled into criminal matters, and he became admitted to practice in Texas and before the Fifth Circuit.

His credentials include board certification in criminal law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. That certification marks a formal recognition of specialized knowledge in criminal law and reflects time spent handling criminal cases in court. It also aligns with the practical litigation work he has handled in trial courts and on appeal.

Watts has been active in professional organizations. He serves on the board of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and the Nacogdoches Bar Association. Those memberships keep him connected to peers and to developments in criminal law practice across jurisdictions.

His courtroom work pairs trial strategy with appellate awareness. The combination of a journalism degree and courtroom experience makes him attentive to record-building and the clarity of argument. He represents clients at the trial level and also handles matters that proceed to the Fifth Circuit, reflecting his admissions.

Colleagues describe him as steady in court and focused on the procedural work that underpins effective defense. He has handled a range of criminal matters and tends to emphasize preparation for hearings and appeals. That posture is consistent with maintaining a solo practice and managing both client-facing work and the detailed filings that litigation requires.

He continues to practice through his solo firm, handling criminal defense matters in Texas courts and appellate matters before the Fifth Circuit. He currently focuses his practice on criminal defense in Texas and appellate work in the Fifth Circuit.
