About Dean D.
Dean D. Carrington built a foundation in business and the humanities before turning to law. He earned a B.B.A. from the University of Iowa in 1981, followed by an M.A. in 1983. He returned to the University of Iowa College of Law and received his J.D. in 1993.
After finishing law school, Carrington moved into legal practice. He has worked at Phelan Tucker Law, where he handles a range of matters for individuals and organizations. His background in business informs how he approaches transactional work and client counseling. The combination of a business degree and graduate studies in the humanities gives him a practical and measured way to break down complex issues.
Carrington’s professional life runs alongside steady community involvement. He serves on the boards of Lutheran Family Service and Iowa City Hospice, roles that place him in governance and planning conversations for local nonprofits. He also chairs a committee of the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce, a position that brings him into contact with business leaders and civic initiatives. Those engagements extend his legal work into community service and local economic matters.
Colleagues describe his style as deliberate. He favors clear analysis over rhetorical flourish. That shows up in routine tasks — drafting agreements, reviewing regulatory materials, preparing for hearings — and in longer projects that require coordination among multiple stakeholders. He often acts as a bridge between community organizations and their outside advisers, helping translate legal issues into practical next steps.
Outside of casework, Carrington’s education remains a resource. His business training helps when evaluating financial aspects of a dispute or transaction. His graduate work sharpens research and writing. Taken together, those skills support a steady, procedural approach to legal problems.
He currently practices at Phelan Tucker Law, where he represents clients and advises local organizations.
