About Dawn R.

Dawn R. Elston is an attorney whose career spans federal investigation, prosecution, defense and private practice. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Psychology from Indiana University Bloomington in 1980. She went on to receive her Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville in 1983. Those classrooms set the stage for a career that moved quickly from law school into federal service.

Shortly after earning her law degree, Elston joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a special agent in 1984. The experience gave her firsthand exposure to criminal investigations and the mechanics of federal law enforcement. She returned to local practice a few years later and took a post as a deputy prosecuting attorney in Clark County in 1987. That role introduced her to courtroom work on behalf of the state and to the day-to-day demands of trial practice.

In 1989 she shifted to the public defender’s office in Clark County. The move put her on the other side of the aisle, defending clients in criminal matters and managing caseloads typical of indigent defense. Her career then included time in private firm litigation. In 1998 she served as a litigation associate at Brown Todd and Heyburn, PLLC, where she worked on civil matters and developed courtroom and motion practice skills. She returned to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office in 2001 as a deputy prosecutor, adding further prosecutorial experience to a resume that balances both sides of criminal adjudication.

Elston opened her own practice in 2010, listed as Dawn R. Elston, Lawyer-At-Law. She maintains ties to the bar through membership in the Indiana State Bar Association and the Clark County Bar Association. She is admitted to practice in both Indiana and Iowa. Those admissions reflect a career that has crossed jurisdictions and practice settings.

Her background includes federal investigative work, years of prosecutorial practice and time spent defending clients at the local level. That mix informs how she approaches cases: practical courtroom preparation, familiarity with investigative procedures and an understanding of prosecutorial decision-making. Her current office is listed as Dawn Elston Law on East Court Avenue. She now practices in matters that draw on her experience in criminal law and civil litigation, handling cases that reflect her varied public and private sector work.
