About David

David Shapiro is an attorney who trained at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, earning his J.D. in 2011. He also completed a Certificate in Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business. Those academic credentials set the stage for a career that has moved between large law firms, in-house work and private practice.

He began his post-law school career in New York at Hahn & Hessen LLP in 2011, working as an associate in corporate finance. That role introduced him to complex transactional work and the practical demands of representing corporate clients in financing matters. He left Hahn & Hessen after a period and joined Dechert in 2013 as a finance and real estate associate, where he handled a mix of financing and property-related transactions.

In 2014 Shapiro spent time on secondment at Barclays as legal counsel. The in-house experience gave him exposure to lender-side processes and internal compliance issues. After returning to private practice he joined Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP as an associate in 2016, continuing to work on corporate and finance matters for institutional clients.

In 2017 he established Shapiro Law Group LLC and took the role of principal. Since then he has run a smaller practice that draws on his transactional background. He is admitted in New Jersey and New York and holds membership in the State Bar of New Jersey. Those admissions allow him to represent clients in two adjacent but distinct legal markets.

Shapiro’s work spans corporate finance and real estate transactions, including lending deals, loan documentation, and commercial real estate matters. He brings experience from both the law firm side and a bank secondment, which informs how he approaches deals and counsels clients on risk allocation and documentation. He has handled matters for lenders, borrowers and corporate borrowers in negotiated financings.

Colleagues and clients describe his style as pragmatic and detail-oriented. He tends to focus on the contract terms that shape the economics and the credit protections in a transaction, and he applies practical judgment to drafting and negotiation. He keeps a hands-on role in matters at his firm and supervises outside counsel when engagements require broader teams.

He practices at Shapiro Law Group LLC, where his practice concentrates on corporate finance, real estate matters and related commercial transactions.
