About David L.

David L. Owen began his academic training at Adams State College, where he earned a B.A. in 1983. He took an active role in campus life and served as student government president during his senior year. He then studied law at Ohio Northern University, receiving his J.D. in 1986. While there he participated in Moot Court and completed an internship with the Lima, Ohio, district attorney's office.

After law school, Owen moved quickly into practice. Records show he was working under the Law Office of David L. Owen, Jr. in 1987. Two years later he joined the Federal Public Defender's Office for the Western District of Missouri, taking on criminal defense matters at the federal level. He returned to private practice by 2008, again operating under the Law Office of David L. Owen, Jr.

Owen’s career has stayed centered on criminal defense. His time in the public defender's office exposed him to federal criminal procedure and courtroom work across the Western District of Missouri. In private practice he continued to handle criminal cases and built experience across state and federal dockets in both Missouri and Colorado. He holds authorization to practice in those two jurisdictions.

Beyond casework, Owen has been active in professional circles. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, memberships recorded from 2008 onward. Since 2013 he has served on the board of directors for the Second Chance Center, an organization that works on reentry and related issues.

Colleagues describe him as steady and practical in court. Clients commonly encounter him in hearings and trials where he focuses on factual development and procedural defense strategies. He appears before state and federal judges in jurisdictions where he is admitted and has spent years handling plea negotiations as well as litigated matters.

Today Owen practices from the Law Offices of David L. Owen, Jr., P.C. He continues to represent individuals in criminal matters in both Colorado and Missouri and maintains roles in local and national defense organizations while serving on a nonprofit board.
