Mr. Codell earned his Juris Doctor degree magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1995. During his time at Harvard, he was a Supreme Court Editor of the Harvard Law Review. Prior to law school, he graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College with an A.B. in 1991. After completing his education, Mr. Codell clerked for Judge David S. Tatel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. Codell concentrates his practice in the areas of appellate and constitutional litigation, business litigation, and entertainment litigation. He has handled a wide variety of appellate matters involving constitutional issues, business disputes, employment law, land use, securities law, and arbitration. His practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Throughout his career, Mr. Codell has represented clients in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He has also appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court and various U.S. District Courts, including the Central, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Districts of California. Prior to founding his own firm, he was a partner at Irell & Manella LLP in Los Angeles, where he practiced in the litigation, intellectual property, and appellate practice groups.
Mr. Codell is an active member of the Humanist Legal Society, serving as its Board President. He has also been involved with Equality California, holding former board membership and serving as Vice President. Additionally, he has provided pro bono representation to individuals and organizations in numerous cases that have resulted in historic rulings advancing civil rights. Mr. Codell is fluent in English and Spanish, allowing him to serve a diverse clientele effectively.
