About Daniel Z.

Daniel Z. Rice took a steady path into law after studying the social forces that shape behavior. He earned a B.A. in Sociology and Criminology from the University of Montana in 2006. Two years later he completed his J.D. at the University of Montana School of Law, finishing law school in 2008. Those years in Missoula shaped his view of how law and society intersect.

Rice joined the American Bar Association in 2008 and became a member of the Montana State Bar in 2011. He was admitted to practice in Montana that same year and has maintained an active bar membership since. Early association with national and state bar groups gave him exposure to a range of legal ideas and professional standards.

His career moved quickly from junior roles into firm leadership. In 2011 he became a partner at Lucas & Tonn, P.C. The promotion came soon after his admission to the Montana bar. At Lucas & Tonn he has worked alongside other attorneys on matters brought to the firm, contributing to case strategy and client counsel. Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in the courtroom and methodical in preparation.

Rice’s academic background in sociology and criminology informs how he approaches fact gathering and case analysis. He blends a sense of context about people and communities into his legal work. That perspective can influence how evidence is evaluated, how witness testimony is framed, and how disputes are resolved. He has also remained engaged with professional organizations, keeping up with continuing education and practice developments.

Clients and peers say Rice is steady under pressure and pays attention to detail. He prefers careful planning over courtroom theatrics. His approach emphasizes clear explanation of options and practical next steps. Over time he has built a practice that reflects the intersection of legal doctrine and real-world circumstances, shaped by both his law training and his undergraduate studies.

Outside the office he maintains ties to legal networks in Montana and beyond through the American Bar Association and the Montana State Bar. Those connections keep him current on procedural changes and emerging legal issues. He continues to live and work in Montana, handling legal matters through Lucas & Tonn, P.C.

He currently practices law in Montana at Lucas & Tonn, P.C., where he handles a range of matters for clients in the state.
